The Park

The Grandfey estate is home to centuries-old trees. Among them stand two majestic beeches, from the Latin fagus, which gave the place its name.

The park, which spans over four hectares, includes a formal French garden, an orchard, and a stretch of forest that slopes down to the Sarine River and Lake Schiffenen. Several sculptures created specifically for the setting are placed throughout the grounds.

Flower-filled and carefully maintained, the park is crossed by a public footpath and offers stunning views of the city of Fribourg, its cathedral, and the Pre-Alps. It reveals new charms each day and throughout every season.

Children play here, surrounded by a sense of mystery and magic, while adults enjoy the terrace and lawn, the pétanque court, or the pavilion tucked away in the woods.

The sculptures in the park

Set on a metal base, Feuer Kugel (Fire Ball) by Jürg Hoffmann, known as Gamelle, is made of dozens of tools welded together. A sculpture by day, it becomes a blazing fireball at night, lighting up the garden with its glow.

The Findling by Res Freiburghaus stands in front of Auberge aux 4 Vents. The work contrasts the raw, natural look of the erratic block from Upper Valais, which gives it its name, with a finely polished band that reveals the deep black of the stone.

In the western part of the park lies the Dog Cemetery, a space created by a former owner of the estate who buried her pets there. At its entrance stand two monumental stone women by the sculptor Res Freiburghaus.

Rising above the entrance to the restaurant, the Attrapeur d’air reaches toward the sky and seems to catch the clouds. Created by Sonia Bischofberger, artist and glassblower, the sculpture plays with the air and spins on itself when the wind picks up.

Commissioned by Res Balzli from his friend Luciano Andreani, the Château de la Plätch overlooks the pool. Its allegorical figures, placed on a colonnade of rusted steel, evoke life and death and also serve as fountains. The green that covers them blends harmoniously with the surrounding vegetation.
